Banquet on a stick

I’m hoping to squeeze in a quick road trip to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson this weekend. When I was a kid I loved going to Fair. My parents grew up in Hutchinson and my grandparents lived there – so it was an annual trip for my family. I couldn’t wait for rides in Ye Old Mill, salt water taffy, the demolition derby and lots of other great stuff. But it was the Pronto Pup that took top dog for me. One year I remember making about a dozen trips to the funky yellow Pronto Pup hut for another awesome dog. I hear they now have fried Oreos and fried candy bars at the Fair – but for me, nothing will ever beat “a banquet on a stick.”

Now THAT’S a pumpkin! Maybe it could be hollowed out and made into a garden shed!

Pronto pups… Ha! I still vividly remember staring at a corn dog for the first time *ever* at McCollum Hall cafeteria when I was fresh off the plane from my native France. Was it awe or disbelief or just plain surprise?! A hot dog, fried, and on a stick??! My palate was in for a treat. Over the next few months followed corn on the cob, jello, funnel cakes, pb&j, corn nuts, etc.
I must say that not only have grown accustomed to such decadent and yummy fare, I actually wouldn’t miss a chance to roam the local fairs and markets in search of the perfect and authentic Pronto pup or the most buttered corn on the cob. But my very favorite remains the big ol’turkey legs from the KC Renaissance Festival. Okay, and apples and caramel. Silverware is way overrated!
