OH MY GOSH! I am so happy to see this written about our small town of Holton. There is soooo much to see here! I am from Holton and still shop on the square frequently...just ask my hubby, John. I was born and raised here..went off to college...came back and raised my son in this wonderful setting. I even had a shop here, Grapevine, but couldn't beat the heat of the economy/gas prices, etc...at least that is what I think happened? Don't miss the opportunity or chance to drive to Holton to check it out. It's very much worth the drive! It's unbelievable how many great places there are to eat as well. We now own Trails Cafe and serve the most awesome broasted chicken, grilled steaks, seafood, and italian for a small town. Please come check us out. It's worth it! It's a great place to bring your whole family! Don't forget to take the time to scour the Holton Town Square. WOW! Great stuff for a little teeny tiny place. We have a wonderful quilt shop, home decor store (expressions), ladies and children's clothing boutique (Jan's Ladies Apparel & Little Bits"), great cinnamon rolls at S&A Downtown Cafe. Sherri, the owner, is a classmate of mine. Antiques of Holton, Dan & Shelly, are also great friends...please visit them! I see a "for sale" sign in their window..darn it, anyway! Every small town deserves your visit! They really have a difficult time surviving without you! VISIT HOLTON SOON! Again, you won't be disappointed! We're very proud of everything we have in Holton...and we're State Champs in 4A Football for 2003 and 2005. That says alot for our coach and school system. OK...and the Farmers Market..oh! my gosh! good stuff. It seems to be growing..get it the Farmers Market is growing..hee hee! OK...anyway, Can you tell that I love Holton! You will too! Just visit...OH! Hotel Josephine is also great! I know I have left out something so please just call the Chamber of Commerce at 785-364-3963 to get more details and more info on Holton. Katie will be happy to assist you in any area that I have missed!

Thanks for the great write up about Holton in the Kansas Talk. Katie Ingels, Chamber Director, e-mailed it to all the members with comments how proud it made her feel about Holton. Thank you, the small towns don't get enough pats on the back.

I agree, great fried chicken is tough to beat! One of my most memorable family dinners was at the Brookville Hotel, in the original location in Brookville. What a homey, stay-awhile feeling you'd get, while devouring that delicious chicken and all the fixings. Another place I like to eat fried chicken is the Hickory Tree in Smolan, south of Salina just off I-135. It's only open on weekends, and it's located in an old schoolhouse. There you can eat to your heart's content, not just chicken but also ribs, roast beef, etc. etc.! How lucky we are to have these family-run places in our state!

This makes me want to drive to Holton! I love that in many places like this in Kansas no matter when you show up, you're likely to either be helped by the owner of one his/her relatives. It makes the experience that much more fun!

I love to find out-of-the-way places that I know I can find unusual jewelry, clothing, etc. One such stop that I have shared with many friends is "The Dresser" in Oberlin, Kansas, way out in Decatur County. Probably 5 years ago I bought one of these extremely popular (now!) eyelash yarn knitted scarves. No one around Topeka had even seen one whe I first started wearing mine! I have other great first-finds that bring me many compliments as well!

Pronto pups... Ha! I still vividly remember staring at a corn dog for the first time *ever* at McCollum Hall cafeteria when I was fresh off the plane from my native France. Was it awe or disbelief or just plain surprise?! A hot dog, fried, and on a stick??! My palate was in for a treat. Over the next few months followed corn on the cob, jello, funnel cakes, pb&j, corn nuts, etc.
I must say that not only have grown accustomed to such decadent and yummy fare, I actually wouldn't miss a chance to roam the local fairs and markets in search of the perfect and authentic Pronto pup or the most buttered corn on the cob. But my very favorite remains the big ol'turkey legs from the KC Renaissance Festival. Okay, and apples and caramel. Silverware is way overrated!

This may shakes up how you view things. Put's them in a different perspective.

I saw a book once that had different ways of looking at a map of the world. It went from showing what it looked like when you centered the map on different places to how countries would be different if they were the size of their number of automobiles, cell phones per capita, etc. Really challenges how you view information.

Me-three on the interesting factor. I'm intrigued by Domincan Republic/Vermont and Vietnam/Rhode Island. There are some strange match-ups.
